Cutting
All measurements include a scant 1/4in
seam allowance. All strips are cut across
the width of the fabric unless otherwise
stated. It is recommended that you cut
and make a sample block before cutting
out all the pieces to complete the quilt.
From the main red fabric
Cut eight 21/2in strips and crosscut
120, 21/2in squares for the Pinwheel
blocks.
Cut five 11/2in strips and crosscut 116
x 11/2in squares for the Nine Patch
blocks.
Cut eight 11/2in strips for the triple
sashing.
Cut 12, 11/2in strips for the triple outer
border.
Cut eight 21/2in binding strips.
From the white background fabric
Cut eight 21/2in strips and crosscut
120, 21/2in squares for the Pinwheel
blocks.
Cut five 31/2in strips and crosscut 48,
31/2in squares for the Pinwheel blocks.
Cut four 11/2in strips and crosscut
100, 11/2in squares for the Nine Patch
blocks.
Cut 16 x 11/2in strips for the triple
sashing.
Cut six 2in strips for the inner border.
Cut six 11/2in strips for the triple outer
border.
Pinwheel blocks
Rule a diagonal line on the wrong side
of each of the 21/2in white squares and
then match them right sides together
with the 21/2in red squares.
Attach the 1/4in foot to the sewing
machine and then stitch 1/4in either side
of the pencil line, as shown in photo 1.
A combination of either blue and white or
yellow and white would perfectly complement
the graphic style of this quilt. A softer effect
would be achieved by working with light-value
scraps for the background and substituting
dark-value scraps for the red areas.
Fabric choices
Photo 1
Cut along the pencil line and press the
seams towards the red fabric. Trim each
of the half-square triangle units to 2in
square using the 41/2in square ruler.
Lay out the half-square triangle
units as shown in photo 2, and then
stitch them into pairs. Press the seams
towards the red fabric.
Photo 2
Join the pairs, carefully matching
the centre seams and press the seam
to one side. Each block requires five
Pinwheel units. For the top and bottom
rows of the block, join a Pinwheel unit
to either side of a 31/2in white square.
For the middle row, stitch a 31/2in white
square to either side of the remaining
Pinwheel unit, as shown in photo 3.
