As autumn turns into winter it is natural
to think about getting some hand
quilting done. Although even the most
bitter winters won’t tempt me to quilt, by
hand or otherwise. I prefer to piece, and
if were really truthful I would say I prefer
to ‘start quilts’, as is witnessed by the
status of my UFOs and my enthusiasm
to start new quilts. But, I have a plan;
my two gorgeous aunties do patchwork
too, so we are going to spend a
weekend together, in the Hunter Valley
in front of the fire, and finish off some
UFOs. I am quite sure I will find that the
majority of my UFOs will be only a day or so off being completed, then they’ll be
carted off to a professional machine quilter. This is my winter goal, what’s yours?
If your plan includes starting a new quilt, we have some beauties for you – two
cot quilts to choose from, a table runner and funky bag, plus an astounding quilt
made by a talented newcomer to duQ, it includes pentagons and Yo-Yos in the
most delightful combination of blues.
Or just sit back and relax and peruse some of the articles. The exclusive
interview with quilt historian Annette Gero is fascinating, as is the story of her
new book (see a review on page 30). We also share an interesting article that
ponders the question of what measurements were used by quiltmakers in the
19th century.
This year, in Nantes France, the inaugural ‘Pour l’Amour du Fil’ show was
presented. Our good friend, editor of the French magazine Quiltmania, Carol
Veillon, was one of the organisers and she has shared some fabulous photographs
with us for your armchair journey to France.
Last but not least, take the time to glean some inspiration from two amazing
artisans. Glenys Mann has been creating textile works for more than three
decades and is a strong influence in the Australian textile art scene, and Michele
Hill, whose book I reviewed last issue, has graciously agreed to share some of her
amazing appliqué pieces that she has produced since last time she shared some
of her work with us in 2005.
Sew, enjoy and keep warm,
