Annette had been collecting Australian old quilt stories for more than two decades,
her filing cabinet overflowing with images, data and stories. It was an immense, but
ultimately satisfying task.
All that information culminated in a 240-page, hard cover book with 130 full
page quilts and 300 other photos, as well as 29 patterns to recreate some of the
gorgeous quilts.
The Fabric of Society shares a rich and diverse history of Australian patchwork
quilts. It covers quilts made by convicts, Governor’s wives, Gold Rush immigrants,
wealthy shop owners, dressmakers, church ministers and more. It reveals a history,
hereto now largely unknown by most. The thread that holds this history together so
poignantly is that each story told not only includes the making of the quilt, but also
the maker’s memories, diaries, letters, official records, newspaper and magazine
articles. The data combines to present a reflection of the domestic influences of
the times.
The stunning quilts include, many of which had not been seen before, show the
rich quality of design and workmanship. They are visually dramatic, and rival any
found anywhere in the world. Quilts as mellow as appliqué made from children’s
clothes through to rag bag waggas and patchwork-covered army blankets reveal
the memories embedded in their cloth.
