Binding
Join the binding strips end to end
using 45-degree seams and press the
seams open. Cut the starting end of
the binding at 45 degrees and press
under a single 1/4in fold, and then
press the binding in half lengthwise
with the wrong sides together.
Start at the centre of one side of the
quilt with the binding opened out. Sew
through one binding thickness for about
three inches. Lift the presser foot, fold
the binding into the doubled position
with all raw edges aligned, and continue
sewing around the quilt, stopping 1/4in
before the first corner.
Remove the quilt from the machine
and fold the binding strip at 45 degrees
towards the top of the quilt, as shown in
diagram 1. Fold the binding strip down
level with the next side of the quilt,
see diagram 2. This will make a mitred
corner when the binding is folded to the
back of the quilt. Continue stitching,
starting at the top of the folded strip.
Repeat this process for all corners.
Once you reach the starting position,
leave the needle in the down position
and place the end of the binding over
the single thickness you sewed at the
start. Cut off the excess binding and
tuck the end of it into the pocket formed
at the starting point.
Turn the binding to the back of the
quilt and slip-stitch it in place.
